Synthetic
Fluids
This
month we will discuss synthetic fluids. Most people
know that synthetics fluids are far superior to
there dino oil counter parts. I will try to explain
the differences between synthetic fluids and dino
oil and how to choose the right fluid. I will
not tell you what the best fluid is. I have found
that most synthetic fluids are equal and it is
a matter of personal taste.
Synthetic
fluids are completely man made in a laboratory.
This makes them virtually free of any contaminants
and easier to make to exacting specifications.
Dino fluids on the other hand are processed from
crud oil pumped from the ground. It must go through
several processes just to get it usable form.
So the advantages of synthetics over dino fluids
are much better control over their molecular structure.
This is what makes them superior to dino fluids.
Synthetic
oil is the most common used synthetic fluid. It
has been around for over 30 years. Synthetic oils
are more slippery then petroleum oil and don’t
break down as fast. It allows for easier cold
weather starting and better viscosity for hotter
weather. Most synthetic oil can extended the drain
intervals. Most can go at least to the manufacturer’s
recommend oil change (most are 3 months/4500 miles).
Others, like AMSOIL, allow much longer intervals
(12 months/25,000 miles). Synthetic motor oils
also contain a detergent to keep the internals
of the engine clean.
Transmissions
are another good place for synthetic fluids. Synthetic
transmission fluid offers superior protection
against friction and heat which is the number
one cause of transmission failure. Since synthetics
are more slippery then normal fluids, they allow
for smother, quieter shifts. Synthetic transmission
fluid will not break down as quick as conventional
fluids.
Other
areas can benefit from synthetic fluids as well.
The differential on a rear wheel drive car or
truck, grease for steering and suspension components,
and bearing grease for wheels all have synthetic
alternatives. There are even additives for the
water in your radiator to give you better cooling
protection.
Some
of the benefits of synthetic fluid are listed
below:
- 1.
Better protection against wear.
2. Will not break down as quick as conventional
fluids.
3. Longer life.
4. Better protection against heat and friction.
Synthetics
cost a little more than conventional fluids, but
the cost is outweighed by the benefits. Synthetics
are also factory fill for most high performance
cars like the Corvette and the Viper. There have
been several tests that show an increase of horsepower
with using synthetics in your engine and driveline.
Reports have been anywhere from 5 to 15 horsepower
increase. Not bad for something that is so easy
to do. As you can see synthetics are great additions
to any vehicle. If you have any questions or comments,
please let us know.

always, you can send me an email at the address

Until
next month... L8R
