This car was purchased in August of 1998. It was driven
back from Minnesota were it was used as farm vehicle by
my grandmother-in-law. When the Caprice arrived in Mesa,
project El Capitan was started. The first thing
was going down to AIM
Industries and buying a billet grill insert for
the grill and a full bag kit for the front and the rear.
We also bought Chassis Tech front drop spindles
and shock relocation kits. The following day we went down
to Discount
Tire and ordered a set of 18" Centerline
"Spears" wrapped with 215/20x18 B.F.
Goodrich Euro T/A tires. After acquiring all the
necessary items the car was taken to Trevco, where
we began the project. Trevor and I had the car bagged
in 2 days. Three months later the Caprice was taken to
Jeff Prespenit, the owner of JP Concepts, where
the interior was completely pulled out and wrapped in
blue tweed. After the tweed was done I thought it needed
something else, so I decided to take it to a local body
shop called Central Paint, where everything was
shaved and lead filled then repainted factory blue with
a silver pearl. Realizing how much I missed the sliding
rag top that I had in the old Accord went down to Street
Beat and bought a 40"x40" Brytech
Ragtop. Returning to Trevco, we installed it. Now all
it needed was sound, so off it went to Jeremy Clanton
at Elite Auto Sound and Security, where he put
in a complete stereo.
Thanks to a guy who could not drive very well, El Capitan
has had on overhaul. I took El Capitan to Rob Drew at
Drew Brothers Customs where he repaired the sheet
metal and laid the new color of Sonic Green from the 2001
VW Bug. Thanks to this new color, my club members have
decided to call the car the Grinch now. I have
added a couple of new things this year besides the paint.
I now have a new set of 20 x 8.5 Vision Phantoms
wrapped in 245x40x20 Michelin Pilots. I also picked
up an Orion Sponsorship. So all of the old stereo
equipment was pulled out of the car. Then Ron "oldman"
Tolbert had his way with the car. He built a custom box,
amp rack and center counsel. After everything was built,
we decided that it needed some color. Therefore, I called
Micah Matthiesen who painted all of my plastic interior
pieces and the sub enclosure with the leftover Sonic Green.
I would like to thank my family for all of their help
and support. |
